BioMar is accelerating its growth strategy in China through a major capacity upgrade at its Wuxi aquafeed site. The move supports demand for premium diets, advanced nursery feeds, and emerging high-value aquaculture species.

BioMar is expanding its aquafeed production capacity in China by adding a second production line at its Wuxi facility, in collaboration with joint venture partner Tongwei. The expansion, scheduled for 2026, aims to double capacity in Wuxi, enable the production of specialty feeds for early growth stages, and support entry into new high-end species segments.
The expansion will add 50,000 tonnes of capacity and introduce advanced technological capabilities, allowing the Wuxi facility to serve new customer segments. In addition to its current focus on high-end species, the upgraded plant will be able to produce advanced nursery feeds and diets for species such as Japanese eel, grouper, and mandarin fish. The new line is expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2027.
SERVING HIGH-END AQUACULTURE SPECIES
Today, the Wuxi production facility primarily supplies farmers producing high-value species including trout, salmon, sturgeon, largemouth bass, turbot, and yellow croaker. The added production line will broaden BioMar’s portfolio in China and enhance flexibility to meet growing demand for specialized and premium aquafeed products.
A SUCCESSFUL FOOTHOLD IN CHINA
BioMar has been present in China since 2016 through its joint venture with Tongwei. While the Wuxi facility was developed as a greenfield project incorporating BioMar’s core manufacturing setup, the Zhuhai (Haiwei) facility was acquired into the joint venture from Tongwei after successfully serving high-end species such as seabass and snakehead. Together, the two facilities currently have a combined capacity of 200,000 tonnes, which is increasingly constraining growth as market interest in BioMar’s product portfolio continues to rise.
“In recent years, we have developed a substantial business presence in China, where we collaborate with customers to introduce innovative feed solutions grounded in BioMar’s research and global experience with high-value species and sustainable aquaculture nutrition. Our goal is to elevate this success by expanding the production capacity in Wuxi with 50,000 tonnes, while integrating advanced technological capabilities into our production facility,” says Carlos Diaz, CEO of BioMar Group.
PART OF A BROADER GROWTH STRATEGY
The Wuxi expansion forms part of BioMar’s broader growth strategy, focused on expanding into new markets in close collaboration with customers and business partners. Over the past decade, BioMar has built business and production capacity in geographies including China, Ecuador, Australia, Iceland, and Vietnam, while also expanding into new business areas such as intelligent feeding technologies.
“We have built a solid model expanding the business, being ambitious in our growth aspirations, while ensuring that each courageous step into new markets is being nurtured and integrated into the BioMar business model. I see this clearly reflected in our books, where investments have historically been followed by growth in volumes and earnings, creating a strong global business for BioMar,” reflects Diaz.
