In animal farming, each production cycle is defined by a beginning. The most critical stage of this beginning is the weaning period. The feeding pattern, intestinal health, and immune system of young animals are reshaped during this period. However, this process can also bring problems such as stress, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and growth stagnation.
In this issue, we address the theme of “Weaning Period and Young Animal Nutrition”, examining potential health problems encountered during the weaning period, feeding strategies to prevent these problems, and the impact of proper nutrition on long-term performance. We hope that expert opinions and innovative product solutions will offer producers a holistic view for sustainable success in feeding their young animals.
This month also brings an important reminder with World Antibiotic Awareness Week, November 13–19, regarding the responsible use of antibiotics. Preserving the effectiveness of antibiotics safeguards both animal and human health and is everyone’s shared responsibility. The livestock sector can do its part in combating this shared problem by implementing preventive strategies that reduce the need for antibiotics. For example, proper feeding approaches during the weaning period, probiotics, prebiotics, organic acids, and phyto-additives can play a critical role in reducing the need for antibiotics by supporting the immune system.
The right start and preventive measures form one of the strongest foundations of sustainable production.
We hope to see you in the next issue…
