A global leader in animal nutrition and health solutions, Kemin Industries has announced the expanded approval of Clostat® for all pig categories within the European Union. The authorization was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 19 December 2024, following a scientific opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) — adopted on 5 January and published on 26 February 2024 — confirming the safety and efficacy of Bacillus velezensis ATCC PTA‐6737 (formerly Bacillus subtilis) as a gut flora stabiliser for pigs for fattening, piglets, and sows. The authorization is valid from 8 January 2025, for a period of 10 years.

For over 20 years, Clostat has helped pig producers worldwide enhance microbiome management and reduce reliance on antibiotics for preventive intestinal health. Previously approved for sows and post-weaning piglets, Clostat is now available for the entire pig production cycle, providing a consistent, research-backed approach to microbiome management — from farrowing to finishing.

PROVEN PERFORMANCE FOR THE ENTIRE PIG LIFECYCLE
Clostat contains Bacillus sp. PB6, a naturally occurring probiotic strain that helps balance the gut microbiome and mitigate harmful bacteria, such as Clostridium spp. This mode of action has demonstrated significant benefits across the three different production stages:
• Sows – Helps maintain gut balance, improving reproductive performance and litter uniformity.
• Piglets – Supports early gut development, reducing digestive disturbances and promoting stronger growth.
• Fattening Pigs – Enhances growth performance, leading to a higher final weight and improved feed efficiency.

COMMITMENT TO INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY
Beyond enhancing productivity, Kemin highlights Clostat as promoting sustainability in the pig industry by optimizing nutrient uptake, supporting animal welfare through improved intestinal health, and contributing to the EU’s antibiotic reduction targets.

“Expanding Clostat’s availability to all pig categories marks a significant step in our mission to provide producers with reliable, science-backed solutions for intestinal health and microbiome management,” said Eric N’guetta, Marketing Manager – Intestinal Health, Kemin Animal Nutrition and Health – EMENA. “Our new Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data further highlights its role in reducing environmental impact while maintaining performance. Pig producers now have a consistent solution to support intestinal health and improve overall animal performance at every stage of production.”
