dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health and Bayer have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance sustainability in the animal agriculture sector.

This new collaboration will enable the value chain to accurately measure and effectively reduce the environmental footprint of farming by combining Bayer’s expertise in primary crop life cycle assessment (LCA) data with Sustell™—an ISO-assured environmental footprinting solution for animal protein.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
Consumers, retailers, food service providers, processors, and even the finance community increasingly demand transparent and credible environmental reporting. Animal nutrition, and especially the crops used for feed, play a decisive role in the overall footprint of animal protein. Reliable, primary data from crop to feed to farm to processor is essential for building trust and enabling smarter, sustainability-driven choices.

A POWERFUL COMBINATION
Bayer has been supporting companies in measuring the carbon footprint of crops since 2020, offering primary crop data.

Sustell™, developed by dsm-firmenich, is highlighted as the most advanced solution for accurate and credible environmental footprint measurement and reporting in animal protein value chains. Sustell™ enables companies to understand the true impact of their operations and identify the most effective areas for improvement while unlocking significant business value.

By bringing these two strengths together, the collaboration aims to establish a new benchmark for transparency and accountability across the entire animal protein value chain—from crop production to processed products.

Lionnel Alexandre, Bayer’s EMEA Head of Ecosystem Services, shared, “We are thrilled about this strategic partnership. The ability to accurately measure, valorize, and recognize the real efforts made by farmers is a critical milestone toward long-term, viable and regenerative agriculture. Extending these capabilities across the animal protein value chain is a powerful step forward for the entire ecosystem.”

David Nickell VP Sustainability and Business Solutions and Head of Sustell™ at dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, added, “This collaboration will benefit companies along the value chain, allowing them to gain more accurate insights into the sustainability of their animal protein supply chains while unlocking significant value opportunities.”

LOOKING AHEAD
This collaboration reportedly underscores Bayer’s and dsm-firmenich’s shared commitment to driving sustainability and innovation in agriculture. By setting new industry standards for environmental footprinting, the two companies are paving the way for more resilient and regenerative farming systems that benefit farmers, consumers, and the planet.
