Agrifirm takes steps towards a responsible food chain

Royal Agrifirm Group announced its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report 2020. According to the report, despite Covid-19 the company was able to support the development and implementation of resource-efficient and circular solutions.

In 2020, Royal Agrifirm Group has worked on further increasing the sustainability of the food chain. The developments are explained in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report 2020 that was published today. As a global player, Agrifirm focuses on solutions for sustainable agricultural entrepreneurship, animal health and restoring biodiversity. Despite Covid-19 Agrifirm was able to support the development and implementation of resource-efficient and circular solutions.

“We are proud that the greenhouse gas emissions of our own operations reduced with 50% by the actions of the ‘Operational Excellence’ team from Agrifirm and the purchase of green electricity, partly produced by our own farmers in the Netherlands.” said Ruud Tijssens, Group Director Public & Cooperative Affairs.

In the Dutch home market Agrifirm is strongly engaged in developing new crop protection strategies, that score significantly better in terms of environmental impact. Last year, Agrifirm launched concepts and products designed to stimulate the recovery of biodiversity. As a founding partner of the Dutch Delta Plan Biodiversity the company foster practical implementations to restore ecosystems, landscapes and the diversity of species. Biodiversity ensures pollination and a vital soil life, which is crucial for a high level of agricultural production.

From Dutch farms to the world market, everywhere Royal Agrifirm Group is working on a sustainable food chain for future generations. For example:
– In China they were awarded by the Chinese government for its antibiotics free animal husbandry solutions;
– In Latin America they reduce the use of plastics;
– In Poland they have been working on a poultry concept with reduced greenhouse gas emission by using regional raw materials;
– In Middle East and Africa they focus on improving animal health.

Besides these local projects, responsible sourcing is a major subject in the company. “70% of our raw materials is proven to be purchased in a responsible manner. We have projects running to improve this figure, for example in the corn supply chain. It will be a long way to achieve 100%, but we will walk this road”, said Ruud Tijssens. Based on regional analyses, Agrifirm continues to hold discussions with suppliers, social organisations and chain partners.
