A series of acquisitions, partnerships, investment decisions, and strategic reorganizations indicate that global competition is now shaped not only by products but also by technology, sustainability, and scale. Notable developments during this period include announcements such as: dsm-firmenich aiming to completely exit the animal nutrition & health business in 2025, the decision by ADM and Alltech to establish a new feed joint venture, Kemin's acquisition of CJ Bio's enzyme and fermentation subsidiary CJ Youtell Biotech, and BASF's search for a strategic partner for its feed enzymes unit. These moves reflect not only the companies' own growth targets but also the trends of the industry's future. Competition in enzyme technologies, the quest to increase the effectiveness of functional additives, and the centralization of sustainability in production processes form the fundamental motivations behind these steps. Similarly, De Heus' new investments in Asia and Africa reveal that global feed producers are now focusing not only on increasing volume but also on regional diversity and supply chain resilience. These expansion strategies signal a long-term belief in the rapidly growing Southeast Asian market and Africa's young and dynamic agricultural economies. On the other hand, the phytogenic nutrition partnership between Bewital Agri and MartinBauer indicates that the interest in natural and plant-based solutions is no longer a temporary trend but a permanent paradigm shift. The collective message of all these developments is this: The sector, which is intensifying its focus on efficiency, innovation, and sustainability, is entering a new era. In this issue of Feed & Additive Magazine, you will see traces of this transformation and the shifting power balance in the industry. You can also find new research and solutions focusing on gut health in farm animals. Enjoy your reading... We look forward to seeing you in the next issue... Read more>> A new study, conducted by Skretting in collaboration with Aker QRILL Company, has found that feeds containing QRILL Aqua can help Atlantic salmon perform better during one of the most challenging phases of their lifecycle: The transition from freshwater to seawater. Aker QRILL Company states that this is the first study on the impact of QRILL Aqua from a commercial-scale field trial during the seawater transfer period. The seawater transfer period is a known bottleneck in salmon farming, marked by appetite suppression, osmoregulation stress, increased disease risk, and higher mortality rates. Industry figures show that a large share of losses occur during the first months at sea, creating both economic and fish welfare concerns. “By combining Skretting’s feed expertise with QRILL Aqua’s proven nutritional benefits, we were able to test under real farming conditions. This is a strong example of how collaboration can advance solutions for the industry,” expresses Kjetil Berge, R&D Leader, Skretting. The 116-day trial, conducted at a commercial salmon farm in Harstad, Norway, compared a commercial diet containing 15% fishmeal to one in which 10% krill meal (QRILL Aqua) was used, thereby reducing the fishmeal by one-third. The study reports that salmon fed the QRILL Aqua diet: • Consumed 3% more feed, • Achieved 22% lower mortality, • Exhibited 4.8% higher growth. NEWS 12 FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE October 2025 Worldwide, sustainability is a growing concern, especially in animal production, as this sector contributes notably to greenhouse gas emissions. Animal feed and formulation play a pivotal role here, since the feed contributes largely to the environmental impact of animal production. A part of the solution comes from animal nutrition and health, with implementation of nutritional strategies that improve feed efficiency and reduce environmental footprint. To guide its customers on their sustainability journey, Adisseo built SustainWay, a dedicated service structured around four different steps. One of these steps emphasizes feed formulation. To address this, Adisseo introduced a new module within its ADICT tool, enabling nutritionists, sustainability managers, and other professionals to balance feed nutrition, cost efficiency, and environmental impact. Through the ‘ADICT sustainability module’, Adisseo points out that users can: • Extract environmental impact values for many ingredients and origins (GFLI database) and hence integrate them into the formulation software, • Formulate feeds with three dimensions: nutrition, economy and sustainability, • See where the ‘environmental impact hotspots’ are in the feed and see how certain changes influence the total carbon footprint of the diet (and other impact categories) and the feed cost. By combining innovative nutritional products and solutions with science-based services such as ADICT, Adisseo reportedly supports the transition towards a more responsible, sustainable and efficient livestock sector. Read more>> On the opening day of the 2025 Global Shrimp Forum, being held from 2-4 September, BioMar, Innovafeed, and Auchan announced a significant industry commitment: The large-scale integration of insect protein into commercial shrimp feed in Ecuador. This milestone is viewed as a turning point for both the insect and aquaculture industries, demonstrating that insect protein is a viable part of the solution in responsible and resilient shrimp farming. Insect meal is much more than a protein source, it contains functional nutrients like antimicrobial peptides. Recent research from BioMar showed a unique functional benefit in shrimp feeds, making it possible to substitute it with a similarly valued ingredient currently in use. This discovery offers insect meal a viable market entry position in shrimp feeds at its current market value. From there, it’s possible to scale insect meal and hopefully be market competitive in the protein ingredient segment in the future, but for now, it can play a vital role in the functional ingredient segment in aquafeeds, according to the partners’ statement. As part of this industry-first initiative, Auchan, one of Europe’s leading retailers, will support the rollout by integrating shrimp raised on this next-generation feed into its responsible sourcing strategy and product offering. The goal is clear: To automate and modernize the facilities to support business growth and enhance workplace safety and ergonomics. “This investment plan addresses a dual challenge: supporting the site’s industrial momentum and sustainably improving production conditions for our teams,” emphasized Thierry Le Sausse, Industrial Director of the CCPA Group. The work, which began in the summer of 2025 and will continue through 2026, includes: • Replacing existing silos and adding 12 finished product cells to streamline shipments, • Installing automated micro-dosing cells to expand the range of raw materials (over 350 references), • Improving dust treatment systems, • Reorganizing storage areas and redesigning the truck traffic flow. These investments will increase the plant’s annual production capacity by 20%, shift operations from 3x8 to 2x8, and strengthen safety and ergonomics at workstations, the company stated. The ceremony brought together the CCPA Group’s Board of Directors and the project team. A key moment was symbolized by an official ribbon-cutting by President Mickaël Marcerou, illustrating the group’s long-term development ambitions.
