NEWS 98 FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE April 2025 Dairy farmers are aware of what it means to “do more with less.” More milk fat. Less impact on the environment. More output. Less input. Understanding the challenges of meeting these expectations, Novus shared insights on how to reduce dry matter intake without getting less from cows at the Western Dairy Management Conference in Nevada, USA, April 1-3. Sarah Stocks, Ph.D., Technical Services Manager at Novus, will present “Every Kilogram Counts: Drive Higher Returns from DMI” during the pre-conference program. “I’m going to talk about efficiency – doing more with less,” Stocks says. “With changes in milk pricing and the ever-present state of feed prices, optimizing rumen performance to help cows get more energy from every bite can make a difference for dairy farmers.” During her talk Sarah Stocks explained the pivotal role of dry matter intake (DMI) in optimizing income over feed cost and the practical strategies that maximize feed efficiency, cow performance and farm profitability. “I hear farmers talk about income over feed cost, but I don’t see everyone using it effectively as a tool,” she continues. “This is probably because there are so many pieces involved. But when we put it all together, dig into the economics of the dairy operation, and take advantage of the technologies available in the market, what we can get is better cow performance and lower total feed costs. It’s certainly worth the effort.” Read more>> Novus gives insights on getting more from feed at WDMC 2025 The Institute for Feed Education and Research (IFEEDER), in collaboration with the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) and North American Renderers Association’s (NARA) research arm the Fats and Proteins Research Foundation (FPRF), announced a new report that quantifies the amount of feed consumed by America’s major livestock, poultry and aquaculture species. In 2023, U.S. livestock, poultry and farmed aquaculture consumed approximately 283.6 million tons of feed, according to the IFEEDER report. “The new IFEEDER feed consumption data demonstrates the vital role that feed mills, ingredient suppliers, liquid feed manufacturers, renderers and row crop farmers play in keeping animals fed throughout their lives, which, in turn, provides Americans with nutritious meat, milk and eggs,” said Lara Moody, IFEEDER Executive Director. “On behalf of our project partners AFIA and FPRF, IFEEDER is pleased to make this data readily available as part of its ongoing mission to advance understanding and trust in a sustainable animal feed supply chain.” The project, conducted by researchers at Decision Innovation Solutions (DIS), which has conducted similar studies in the past for IFEEDER, used a ration cost optimization model to quantify the consumption of feed ingredients for the major animal species.
