Because we know that the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in animals is a major contributor to the increasing spread of resistant pathogens. Therefore, it is an urgent need to reassess how we manage animal health. In this issue of Feed & Additive Magazine, we focus on the vital challenge of reducing antibiotic use in animals while continuing to ensure animal welfare and the safety of the food supply. A strategy of protection and prevention is a key step in tackling this challenge. Protective vaccinations, hygienic housing conditions, balanced and sufficient feeding, quality feed and water supply, managing stress... All these practices, which are part of the protection and prevention strategy, support immunity at the same time. This is also very important, since strong immunity is one of the most promising strategies in the fight against antibiotic resistance. Animals with strong and resilient immune systems are better able to fight infections through natural methods and have less need for antibiotics. A robust immune system not only improves overall animal health, but also minimises the impact of disease outbreaks, bringing a more sustainable and ethical approach to animal production. Feed additives that support nutrition and feeding play a key role in this process, as the right balance of nutrients can support the development and function of the immune system. For example, feed additives such as prebiotics, probiotics, essential oils and organic acids can help improve gut health and microbial balance, creating an environment that decreases the likelihood of harmful pathogens thriving. These additives can improve feed efficiency and animal performance, boost immunity and reduce the occurrence of diseases requiring antibiotic treatment. By incorporating such tools into livestock management practices, we can not only reduce the use of antibiotics, but also improve the overall health and welfare of animals. If you want to be informed about the latest developments and strategies that will light the way for a healthier and more sustainable livestock sector, keep following our magazine. 6 FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE February 2025 EUROPEAN LIVESTOCK VOICE: A UNIQUE INITIATIVE AT EU LEVEL TO TALK ABOUT LIVESTOCK FARMING Roxane Feller Chairwoman European Livestock Voice LEAD ARTICLE European Livestock Voice stands as a unique initiative in the European agricultural landscape, both in its structure and in its objectives. It emerged from a simple observation during the 2019 European elections when agriculture—and livestock farming in particular—became a central topic of political debate, often reduced to caricatural opinions and targeted by massive communication campaigns fuelled by the rise of so-called "alternative" food products. This observation revealed a glaring issue: sectoral associations representing and working on livestock-related matters were not adequately equipped to engage in these heated debates. In an environment where controversies and sensational images followed one after another at breakneck speed, media attention had already shifted to the next topic by the time a rational, fact-based response was formulated. This dynamic created controversy after controversy, and a distorted public image of European livestock farming, disconnected from the realities on the ground. Evolving debates around livestock farming further complicated matters, as discussions moved beyond technical and sector-specific issues to broader societal and cross-cutting questions about the role and value of livestock in a society increasingly detached from rural life. This shift disrupted the traditional singular focus approach of sectoral organisations, highlighting the need for a collective and coordinated response. In this context, European Livestock Voice was born as a collective reaction in Brussels, bringing together leading European sectoral associations working on livestock-related issues. Today, the coalition includes 14 associations spanning aquaculture, rabbit farming, animal health, and animal feed and more. Together, we pool our efforts to communicate about the practical realities of livestock farming in Europe. From the outset, we established clear principles and a method: to respond collectively, rather than in isolation, to major debates in Brussels. Our communication is grounded in agronomic, scientific, and economic facts, and we do not shy away from addressing difficult and sensitive issues head-on. We also strive to use more original and impactful communication tactics to better capture public and political attention. Over the past five years, European Livestock Voice has run numerous activities that have significantly contributed to raising awareness and shaping perceptions. We highlighted some of the challenges linked to the European Commission's Farm to Fork Strategy, demonstrating that certain targets could have severe consequences for livestock production and lead to relocation outside Europe without delivering genuine environmental benefits. We explained why the idea of a "meat tax" was misguided, and we campaigned against the misuse of traditional food product names for alternative products. We were among the first to share information about the realities of cellular meat production. We also highlighted the benefits and challenges of carbon farming and the reuse of livestock effluents. When the debate on the Industrial Emissions Directive emerged, we invited Commissioners and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to
FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE 7 February 2025 visit farms and engage directly with farmers, which ultimately contributed to a more balanced proposal. Our flash action in front of the European Commission when livestock farming was overlooked in the Agri-Outlook conference further demonstrated our commitment to ensuring the sector's voice is heard. Initially designed for and by the Brussels ecosystem, European Livestock Voice quickly garnered interest from national associations. As a result, we established national chapters from Portugal to Poland, creating a two-way communication channel: relaying information from the field to Brussels while fostering a better understanding of EU debates at national level. This approach has proven essential in bridging the gap between grassroots realities and high-level policy discussions. As Ursula von der Leyen's European Commission embarks on its second mandate, it is time to take stock and look ahead. Evaluating the impact of communications is always challenging, but there are clear signs that European Livestock Voice has made a difference. On several key proposals presented by the European Commission, our fact-based work has influenced perceptions and outcomes. For instance, our arguments on the Farm to Fork Strategy resonated with many MEPs, prompting them to take a more nuanced view. On the Industrial Emissions Directive, our efforts to bring policymakers to farms for direct exchanges with farmers led to a more balance in the discussions, better reflecting the realities of livestock farming. Beyond this, the overall narrative around livestock farming in Brussels is changing. The current geopolitical context has underscored the importance of ensuring strategic autonomy in food, energy, and biomaterials. This shift has restored livestock farming's importance in the political debate. The role of livestock was acknowledged in the strategic dialogue initiated by Ursula von der Leyen, aimed at overcoming the impasse of the top-down Farm to Fork approach. More recently, Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen announced the development of a dedicated strategy for the future of European livestock—a development that European Livestock Voice will closely monitor to ensure a comprehensive understanding of its implications. The renewed attention to livestock farming is further evidenced by the European Parliament's decision to establish a new intergroup on sustainable livestock. This platform will bring together scientists, industry professionals, and policymakers for in-depth discussions on livestock-related issues ahead of parliamentary votes. European Livestock Voice fully supports this initiative and will actively participate in its activities. As the new European Commission finalises its work programme, much remains uncertain. While we already know that key issues from the previous mandate will continue—such as animal welfare during transport and the economic impact of trade agreements like Mercosur—many aspects are still undefined. However, one thing is certain: livestock farming will remain a focal point, and there will be a constant need for dialogue, explanation, and engagement. This is why European Livestock Voice will continue and will expand its initiatives. The importance of fostering informed debates and advocating for a balanced and fact-based understanding of livestock farming has never been greater. If you want to stay informed about livestock-related debates and engage with us, we invite you to follow us on our social media channels at @LivestockVoice. The conversation is far from over, and we are determined to keep the voice of European livestock heard.

NEWS 12 FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE February 2025 BENEO introduced its low-glycaemic syrup BeneoCarb S for pet food applications, including semi-moist and moist products or snacks. Derived from sugar beet, this syrup offers producers a natural alternative to traditional ingredients such as glucose syrup or caramel, as well as an opportunity to appeal to health-conscious pet owners. With attractive nutritional and technological properties, the company points out that BeneoCarb S is a valuable addition to any petfood manufacturers’ ingredients portfolio. Pet owners are increasingly demanding healthier pet foods, with 4 in 5 considering their pet’s health to be as important as their own. With the number of overweight and obese pets on the rise, incorporating low-glycaemic carbohydrates into their food can help with blood glucose and weight management. BeneoCarb S is a carbohydrate source which features high levels of the low-glycaemic disaccharides isomaltulose and trehalulose. Both occurring naturally in honey, they generate lower glycaemic and insulinemic responses thanks to a stronger glycosidic bond than that of standard sugar, BENEO emphasizes. Therefore, compared to “fast” carbohydrates like sucrose or cooked starches, they support a more balanced blood glucose management. Read more>> BENEO introduces its new syrup for pet food The European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (FEFAC) President Pedro Cordero noted the European Commission’s decision to impose high anti-dumping import duties for lysine from China published on 14 January 2025. In his initial response to this unprecedented measure for critical feed additives, Pedro Cordero stated: "The EU premix and compound feed manufacturers expressed deep concern about the extremely high level of the provisional EU import tariffs for Lysine. Currently, the EU depends on China for 60% of its Lysine demand (total EU usage app 500,000 tons equivalent lysine hydrochloride). There are no sufficient alternative supplies from EU production or other 3rd countries which can replace imports from China. Therefore, this measure may lead to significant adverse economic consequences for the EU feed and livestock sector." “FEFAC wants to alert the EU Commission that the provisional import duties may disrupt lysine imports and will have an inflating impact on quotations of lysine on the EU market creating market distortions with 3rd countries. FEFAC therefore calls on the EU Commission to provide effective and targeted financial compensation for EU livestock farmers, who will see their competitiveness further weakened, particularly for poultry and pig production,” said Pedro Cordero. FEFAC President Cordero underlined: “FEFAC in no way condones dumping practices distorting fair competition. FEFAC is also supportive of any targeted EC policy measures which could help strengthen the competitiveness of EU feed additive producers, which could reduce strategic dependence on China for critical feed additives. FEFAC therefore urges the EU to recognise essential amino acids and vitamins as “critical materials”. Read more>> High anti-dumping duties on lysine imports concern manufacturers

NEWS 22 FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE February 2025 One of the world’s largest innovators of natural botanical extract ingredients and solutions, Layn Natural Ingredients announced the launch of a line of feed additives for poultry and swine production that leverages the advantages of water delivery for polyphenols. These cutting-edge solutions were showcased during IPPE 2025. The introduction of water-soluble polyphenol additives marks a significant advancement in production animal nutrition, Layn explains. By administering polyphenols via drinking water, farm managers gain full control over their use, allowing precise adjustments to type, dosage, and treatment duration to address specific animal needs. This method offers several advantages over traditional feed supplementation: • Immediate Availability: Polyphenols delivered in drinking water are accessible to animals almost instantly, ensuring rapid efficacy. • Reduced Administration Delays: Unlike feedbased supplementation, which requires feed mill processing and delivery, water delivery eliminates storage and logistical complications. • Mitigation for Heat-Stressed Animals: Animals experiencing heat stress may reduce feed intake but consistently consume drinking water, making water-soluble polyphenols an ideal solution for maintaining health and productivity. “Water delivery of polyphenols represents a game-changing approach in production animal nutrition,” says Mary Joe Fernandez, Global VP of Sales and Business Development at Layn Natural Ingredients. “This innovation not only simplifies the supplementation process but also ensures animals receive critical nutrients when they need them most.” Read more>> Layn showcases its water-soluble polyphenol feed additives One of the leaders in intelligent nutrition, Novus International, Inc. shared its analysis of soybean meal quality in the United States and research on copper sources in broilers during the International Poultry Scientific Forum (IPSF), held in conjunction with IPPE 2025. IPPE took place on January 2830, and IPSF occurred on January 27-28, 2025 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. “Soybeans are the primary source of protein and amino acids in poultry diets. The quality of soybean meal is extremely important to the industry. Novus has been studying soybean meal quality for years with this new analysis looking at the activity of trypsin inhibitors in soybean meal produced in the U.S.,” says Mark Moran, Novus Commercial Director for North America. Trypsin inhibitor (TI) is an anti-nutritional factor found in soybean meal that can affect amino acid digestibility, ultimately impacting broiler performance. “We’ve been using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) technology for years to better understand the level of TI activity in soybean meal from around the world,” explains Frances Yan, Ph.D., Senior Manager of Global Poultry Research at Novus. “This study looks at samples from the U.S. from 2021-2024 to get a clearer picture of what poultry producers are feeding their broilers.” Read more>> Novus shares analysis of US soybean meal quality
