Feed & Additive Magazine Issue 48 January 2025

NEWS 18 FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE January 2025 Following a comprehensive 12-month assessment, the European Commission's SCoPAFF on Animal Nutrition officially endorsed the upgraded Copa-Cogeca & The European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (FEFAC) Code of Good Labelling Practices for compound feed. The endorsement at the meeting of 2-3 December, 2024, marks a significant step forward in the promotion of sustainable feed production and reduction of livestock production’s emissions, according to the announcement. Inspired by the proposal for the Green Claims Directive, the updated code includes detailed guidelines for communicating the environmental performance of animal feed to farmers, addressing key impact areas such as climate change, eutrophication, and livestock emissions abatement techniques. The enhanced code, which integrates the PEFCR Feed for Food- Producing Animals methodology and the Global Feed LCA Institute database, offers a harmonised approach to labelling that supports the feed sector’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint. Developed with the support of FEFANA, the code also provides clear recommendations for substantiating environmental claims for compound feed, especially in relation to livestock emissions abatement techniques. More specifically, it ensures that feed producers can transparently report on the environmental impact of their products, enhancing the feed sector's transparency towards both livestock farmers and consumers. By including information on 16 environmental impact categories, including water use and biodiversity, it addresses the need for accurate reporting to meet Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions requirements. This approval comes after extensive review of efficacy data in poultry and detailed evaluation by Brazilian authorities, the company explained. BiomElix® One was reportedly developed using FOLIUM Science’s proprietary CRISPR-Cas based technology platform called Guided Biotics®. According to the company statement, this product uses natural biological systems to modulate the microbiomes of animals improving productivity by removing unwanted microbes and bacteria, while preserving the beneficial ones, resulting in a healthier animal gut. In addition, this first BiomElix® product improves productivity in poultry in the presence of all Salmonella bacteria. “This is a significant milestone for us as a business as well as for the animal nutrition industry,” says FOLIUM Science CEO Ed Fuchs. “Not only it does demonstrate our unique expertise in the use of CRISPR technology to manage microbiomes and support an animal’s gut, but it also supports the industry’s goals to meet consumer demands for meat produced without excessive use of antibiotics. This may be the dawn of next generation probiotics, but the hard work is yet to come.” Read more>> FOLIUM Science's new product approved in Brazil
