6 FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE November 2024 The world population is increasing, and so is prosperity. This means that meat consumption worldwide will continue to increase, and that we need to intensify production. To feed the world, we need to produce safe, affordable and healthy food in an efficient way. At SFR, we have the knowledge and the expertise to support nutritionists all over the world to improve pig nutrition in their specific situation. A big advantage of SFR is that we provide independent advice: we do not sell premixes or additives, we have a load of research data available to provide solid background on the effects of feed composition on animal production, health parameters and the environment. I see room for improvement worldwide mainly in further development of feed evaluation, and the application of extensive data on raw material composition and processing effects. Nowadays, more than fifty percent of turnover in SFR products and services is attained outside of The Netherlands, and we expect that this share will increase further in the future. Especially our Asian market is developing fast. CHALLENGES IN SWINE PRODUCTION Nowadays, swine production faces many challenges. We need to increase production efficiency, reduce the use of antibiotics, improve animal health and welfare, and reduce the environmental impact of animal husbandry. Fortunately, here in The Netherlands we have a wealth of knowledge and experience on these subjects. This knowledge and expertise is very valuable for countries all over the world. More than fifty percent of our growing pigs in The Netherlands are fed on liquid diets containing wet and dry by-products from the food industry. In our country, we have a lot of data on a broad variety of feed ingredients, processing and feed quality. In the Western world, and especially in The Netherlands, ninety percent of the population is not actively involved in food production, five percent works in the agricultural sector (farmers, feed and food production) and the remaining five percent feels connected to NGO’s related to animal welfare and environmental issues. These NGO’s have better communication and lobbying skills than the agricultural sector and, therefore, have a strong influence on society and politics. The fact that political discussions are often based on model calculations and societal perceptions, and not on scientific facts and measurements is a threat to effective and sound government’s policy. As a consequence, it is hard for Dutch and European pig farmers to make management decisions for the future of their enterprise. Nevertheless, we do not foresee a bleak future for Dutch pig farmers, but it remains hard to preNUTRITIONAL CONSULTANCY, WORLDWIDE Jan Fledderus Product Manager Swine and Consultant Schothorst Feed Research (SFR) LEAD ARTICLE
ARTICLE FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE November 2024 7 dict how much room for pig production will remain in The Netherlands. Developments in society and politics are unclear at the moment, but in my opinion pig production in closed barns, with air washers, does not impose a threat to air quality in the environment. Our advanced swine sector is very capable of producing pigs in a sustainable, animal and environmental friendly manner. Another issue is the import of nutrients from other parts of the world into Europe. This leads to an environmental burden that largely might be solved by allowing export of swine manure to for example Eastern Europe. In the eastern part of Germany, there is a need for manure to sustain soil fertility. EXPANDING A LARGE DATABASE SFR has developed a large database containing nutritional composition of many raw materials. We are continuously expanding this database, to include all ingredients that are used in animal nutrition to include all ingredients that are used in animal nutrition by customers of SFR. These data help us to provide custom-made advice for our clients in Europe and abroad. We actively collect data on feed materials from various parts of the world. Rice by-products, e.g., are widely available in Asian countries, so we need to collect nutritional data on such commodities to accommodate the questions we receive from our customers in that part of the world. CALCULATION TOOLS BASED ON SOLID AND EXTENSIVE RESEARCH The MySFR tool is developed to provide insight to nutritionists. MySFR enables nutritionists to implement the database into their own formulation software. The software tool helps us as consultants to discuss options and consequences of choices in feed formulation. Our data and calculation tools are based on solid and extensive research, and therefore yield predictable outcomes for pig farmers. As a consultant, I use the tool to evaluate different choices in feed formulation. Performing these calculations together with the nutritionist, and discussing the effects and consequences eventually brings us to a tailor-made advice. Also, it gives me valuable insights in market developments. Discussing these insights with the researchers at SFR and with our customers helps us to focus our research and develop new products and services for our customers. Extensive knowledge of raw materials is the starting point; coupling this to nutritional requirement of the animals results in the best advice for SFR clients.

NEWS 16 FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE November 2024 One of the world’s leading specialty chemicals companies, Evonik celebrated 50 years of methionine production at its Antwerp, Belgium site, which has played a major role in its global methionine business. Together with the Wesseling site in Germany, Antwerp now forms the European pillar of Evonik’s global production network for MetAMINO® (DL-methionine), an essential amino acid used for animal feed, the company stated. The specialty chemicals company used the anniversary as an opportunity to celebrate and an occasion to appeal to EU policymakers. “The global success story of MetAMINO® began in Antwerp. Key production standards were developed here which are the basis for our global asset hubs. Today, methionine is essential in modern animal husbandry, supporting sustainable animal protein production—whether it's poultry, eggs, or milk—helping to feed the global population,” said Thomas Wessel, Chief Human Resources Officer and Labor Director of Evonik. To ensure a successful future for European production sites like Antwerp, Evonik's management is engaged with industrial policymakers. “IndusOver 50 delegates from the cell-cultured protein industry came together for the official opening of the world’s first dedicated food-grade powder production facility for cell feed at Nutreco in Boxmeer, The Netherlands. Opening the event David Blakemore, CEO of Nutreco, welcomed the community and talked to the importance of continuous innovation and collaboration in the industry to tackle to challenge of feeding an ever-growing global population sustainably, and the role Nutreco is taking to support the industry’s growth. “We recognise the possibilities in cultivated protein and think this industry holds tremendous potential. One of the biggest challenges it faces though is how to feed the protein cells cost-efficiently, sustainably and at very large scale. At Nutreco, we believe we can create cell culture media with a lower cost and enable the industry to scale up and bring to the masses something that is currently only available to a limited few,” said Blakemore. Keynote speaker Emeline Fellus, Senior Director, Agriculture and Food at the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) kicked off a packed agenda with a discussion around food centricity to our health, culture and wellbeing, and to our planet and socio-economy. Reflecting on the history of agri-food systems, she shared: “Our current agri-food systems were designed to deliver affordable, accessible, and safe food to a growing global population. However, the system built to maximise efficiency and caloric supply regardless of resources use no longer fits the values or challenges of the 21st century.” Read more>> Nutreco holds inauguration ceremony for world’s first cell feed production facility Evonik celebrates 50th anniversary of DL-methionine production in Belgium
NEWS FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE November 2024 17 try is the basis of our prosperity in Europe. If European production sites are to survive in the face of global competition, policymakers must ensure competitive framework conditions,” underlined Johann-Caspar Gammelin, President of Evonik’s Nutrition & Care division. This is why Evonik, in February, signed the Antwerp Declaration for a European Industrial Deal with more than 70 other industry leaders. Evonik serves growing global feed markets from three world-scale production hubs in three different parts of the world: Antwerp, Mobile (Alabama, USA), and Singapore. The company states that the annual global production capacity for MetAMINO® has reached more than 700,000 metric tons. “Only Evonik has a global production network for methionine for animal feeds, ensuring the greatest possible supply security – even in uncertain times like today,” stated Dr. Gaetano Blanda, Head of Evonik’s Animal Nutrition business line. Evonik continuously invests in its methionine production network to grow with its customers and to reduce the ecological footprint of manufacturing – in Antwerp and globally. Just recently, Evonik completed the expansion of its DL-methionine production in Singapore, and the backward integration of its methionine production at the Mobile plant is underway. Evonik pointed out that both measures also reduce the product-specific CO2 footprint of MetAMINO®, which is currently around 35 percent below the industry average. In order to be sure that it is producing the very best quality feed, the company makes use of NIR (near infrared spectroscopy) instruments to provide rapid and accurate nutritional analyses of feed ingredients, intermediate products, and finished feeds. To this end, the company explains that 600,000 samples are manually passed through around 60 instruments annually, generating over three million analytical results. Although the samples require little preparation and results are available almost instantly, the processes are dependent on process operators to collect samples and run scans at intervals. “We wanted to know how we can relieve them from the task of chemical analysis so that they can focus on their main job, which is to produce the feed,” says Ørjan Breivik, NIR Team Lead at Skretting Aquaculture Innovation. In collaboration with Skretting Norway, they launched an online NIR project to automate a process that aims to define when to collect samples and perform the analysis – without any human intervention. NEWS 22 FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE November 2024 The latest installment in the Selko webinar series features one of the world’s most preeminent thought leaders on dairy cattle health and performance. Dr. Jose Santos, Professor of Dairy Science at the University of Florida, will reveal findings from a recent study exploring how the source of trace mineral affects lactational performance, reproductive performance and animal health status during the critical transition period. The seminar is free-of-charge and will be presented on Monday, November 18, at 9:00 a.m. U.S. EST and 15:00 CET. Registration for the webinar, which will include a live question and answer session, is available on Selko’s website. Ranging from three weeks prior to calving to three months following calving, the transition period places immense pressure on the dairy cow. Research shows that dietary components can play a key role in helping support performance and health status during the transition period. Findings from a study recently conducted by Dr. Santos show that the selection of trace mineral can have a significant effect on dairy cow productivity and health during the transition period. Several findings show that feeding a less-soluble mineral source can deliver benefits that support the animal as well as producers’ economics. For example, cows receiving an IntelliBond mineral source were observed to have a 2% increase in feed efficiency, a 19% boost in colostrum yield, and a 1.5 kg (4%) increase in energy-corrected milk (ECM) yield compared to cows receiving a sulphate mineral source.
