NEWS FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE September 2024 115 U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) announced that its customers worldwide now have access to information about the carbon footprint of sustainably-verified soy exported with the U.S. Soy Sustainability Assurance Protocol (SSAP), facilitating their scope 3 emissions reporting. The carbon footprint data is provided by the Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI), an independent, nonprofit institute that provides environmental impact data on feed and food ingredients, including U.S. Soy crops. GFLI’s database includes more than 1,800 datasets, with more data coming online soon. All GFLI datasets are calculated according to the Institute’s methodology, which is based on the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance Partnership (FAO-LEAP) guidance documents on animal feed supply chains and feed additives and is aligned with the EU Product Environment Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) Feed. “We are the first organization to use GFLI data in this way,” says Abby Rinne, Director of Sustainability for the U.S. Soybean Export Council. “This exciting development will allow customers of U.S. Soy to incorporate environmental impact data in their carbon accounting for scope 3 emissions reporting.” Read more>> One of the world leaders in specialty chemicals, Evonik announced that the expansion of the company’s MetAMINO® (DL-methionine) production facilities in Singapore completed. The MetAMINO® production on Jurong Island is again running at full capacity, after shutdowns in Q4/2023 and Q2/2024. The production capacity has been increased by 40,000 metric tons, bringing the total to 340,000 metric tons per year. The expansion was accomplished ahead of schedule and through process intensification, Evonik has explained that it optimized its methionine production plants, generating a surplus of steam that is used to produce on-site electricity. Linde, one of Evonik's partners on Jurong Island, has designed, constructed, and is operating a nine-megawatt alkaline electrolyzer plant, which is the largest of its kind ever installed in Singapore. Evonik stated that the unit enables its efforts to use green hydrogen required for MetAMINO® production and reflects the company's commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental impact. “Our collaboration with Linde on the implementation of green hydrogen in our Singapore facilities is a testament to our commitment to sustainability. We work closely with our partners to build a more sustainable future," says Dr. Harald Schwager, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board at Evonik. The chemical company added that its DL-methionine plants in Singapore have reduced the product carbon footprint of MetAMINO® at this site (Scope 1+2+3) by six percent compared to before the expansion.
