NEWS 26 FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE April 2021 DLG Test Center completely redesigns feed certification I n the course of increasing demands on the quality and traceability of food of animal origin, the entire value chain is confronted with ever increasing requirements and significantly in- creasing complexity of demands. This means that feed nowadays not only serves to meet the de- mand of the animals, but also has to guarantee their health and performance. Furthermore feed is the basis for an environmentally and animal-friendly production of food, for safety and quality in the value chain and for the prof- itability of the agricultural oper- ation. In order to meet these new requirements on the testing side also, the Test Center Technolo- gy and Farm Inputs of the DLG (German Agricultural Society) has fundamentally redesigned its approach to feed certification. The first test contents have now been presented for the certifica- tion of N-/P-reduced feed as a pilot group, which will also in future conclude with the award of the DLG quality seal. Further focal points will follow shortly. PILOT PRODUCT GROUP: N-/P-REDUCED FEED With a special test mark for N-/P-reduced feed in accordance with the requirements that are described in DLG Expert Knowl- edge Series 418, 444 and 457 for beef, pork and poultry, the DLG Test Center is now about to grant its first certifications. Nitrogen and phosphorus-reduced feed guarantees that the animals are optimally supplied with protein or amino acids and phosphorus while at the same time the excre- tion of nitrogen and phosphorus via faeces and urine is maximally reduced. The possibility of up to 20% less nutrient output from the stable thus can lead – espe- cially in typical livestock regions – to a significant reduction of ni- trate pollution into the soil and groundwater without burdening the animal owner with immense costs. As usual for all feeds award- ed by the DLG, also the N-/P-re- duced feed is subject to contin- uous control. Constant product quality is ensured by means of re- peated tests or audits of the man- ufacturer that take place at least once a year. Four exciting areas in animal health and nutrition Lallemand Animal Nutrition shared information about 4 exciting areas in animal health and nutrition at the 8th Beneficial Microbes Conference. During the 8th Beneficial Microbes Conference, which took place virtually March 22-24, Lallemand Animal Nutrition shared promising insight into dif- ferent areas: addressing parturition stress in rumi- nants, the mother-offspring microbiota transfer in pigs, the role of external microbiota, or biofilm, in farms; and the gut-brain-microbiota communication in dogs. By touching on such diverse areas of micro- biota research, the company demonstrates its exper- tise and position at the forefront of this field of study. Moreover, Dr. Frédérique Chaucheyras-Durand, Research Manager at Lallemand Animal Nutrition, chaired several conference sessions. PROBIOTICS ALLEVIATE THE STRESS OF PARTURITION IN RUMINANTS Dr. Lysiane Dunière from the Lallemand Rumi- nant Center of Excellence presented the first results of a two-year study conducted with INRAE in ges- tating ewes: “Supplementation of a live yeast probi-
