NEWS FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE March 2023 81 In an independent trial conducted at Pipestone Applied Research Facility in the US, pHorce from Anpario was found to be an effective mitigant against Seneca Valley virus, as well as Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea virus (PEDv) and Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus (PRRSv). Seneca Valley virus, also known as Senecavirus A, is a viral disease of pigs which is related to the family of viruses that cause foot-and-mouth disease. Historically, the majority of confirmed cases have been recorded in the US, however more recently cases of Seneca Valley Virus have also emerged in other countries, including England as of 2022. The virus causes vesicular lesions which usually appear around the coronary band and in or around the snout and nares. Lameness is also commonly reported and crusting of the hoof wall may also be observed. Whilst the virus is not notifiable or reportable in the UK, nor is it a listed disease by the World Organisation of Animal Health, the clinical signs do resemble that of notifiable diseases such as foot-andmouth disease. This can lead to significant financial losses as a result of temporary closure until notifiable diseases are ruled out and also reallocation of financial resources towards diagnostic investigation. Therefore, minimising outbreak and spread of the virus is in the interest of pig producers globally. In a recent trial, the triple action feed mitigant pHorce from Anpario has been shown to be an effective viral mitigant. Pigs were challenged with Seneca Valley virus (SVA), PEDv and PRRSv via the feed using an “ice block model”.
