Technology, especially digital technology, is changing and transforming our personal and professional lives step by step. We've all experienced this one-on-one in communications, finance, retail, education, and many other fields for many years. But how do these provide “enormous opportunities”? Let's try to explain this through the digital technologies that have become widespread in the animal nutrition industry. One of the most common digital tools in the industry is software developed for feed formulation. Most of the companies that produce feed have to make use of a feed formulation software today. Because in a highly volatile and competitive market, they are under serious pressure to produce the most nutritious feed for any animal species in the most economical way. The biggest determinant of feed costs is raw material. A raw material that is very affordable and available today may be very expensive or inaccessible tomorrow. In such a case, you may need to remove the raw material in question from the formula. It is quite difficult to manually determine both the more economical raw material to replace it and the necessary supplements to compensate for possible nutrient losses. However, digital technologies can allow you to do this very quickly, in a very short time, thanks to a database created in the light of scientific data and experience. Thanks to these technologies, you can measure your environmental footprint and identify how you can reduce it. Or you can revise it to increase your operating efficiency by comparing the data between the amount of feeding, its method and the amount, quality of animal food production. The product, called PhytriCare® IM, consists of selected plant extracts with a high flavonoid content. Flavonoids are known for their anti-inflammatory effects. The product is available immediately throughout the EU. ADM, one of the world’s leaders in science-backed nutrition solutions, announced that it opened a new production facility in Valencia, Spain to help meet rising global demand for probiotics, postbiotics and other products that support health and well-being. The production facility represents an investment worth of $30 million and a more than fivefold increase in ADM’s production capacity, increasing it to 50 metric tons per year. The facility will allow ADM to supply growing markets for probiotics and postbiotics in the U.S., Asia-Pacific and Europe. ADM expects its customer base will more than triple over the next five years as more people recognize the links between the gut microbiome and many aspects of health and look for products tailored to their specific needs. In addition to probiotics, various other product classes have become established, including phytogenics. The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine have granted Calysta’s FeedKind protein GRAS status for use in the US in salmonid feeds at up to 18% of the diet. In the US FeedKind will be listed under its common name, dried fermentation biomass. According to the company, the ruling means aquaculture companies in the US now have access to a nutritionally rich and non-GMO protein ingredient that both helps preserve biodiversity while addressing a growing market need for proteins for feed and food. “With so many exciting developments in US aquaculture, we are thrilled to be able to access this market. With the new solution customers in malting and brewing, milling, coffee, oat flakes, and animal feed processing industries can benefit from an increase of 80% of throughput capacity, reaching up to 43 tons per hour. “The new addition builds on the success of the revolutionary TUBO system with push technology. With the new 8-inch tubes we offer a system for an even broader range of applications with higher capacity requirements,” said Stefan Anshelm, Product Manager Grain Quality & Supply at Bühler. Up to now, the system has been available with tubes in 5-inch and 6-inch diameters with a throughput ranging from 12 tons per hour to 24 tons per hour. The new TUBO with 8-inch tubes allows for capacities of 40 to 43 tons per hour. The system transports products gently over distances of up to 50 meters in all directions. “With lighter loads and fewer bends in the system’s configuration this can be increased to 70 meters,” said Markus Huber, Product Engineer at Bühler. Like previous releases the new 8-inch TUBO follows the simple and effective principle of pushing instead of pulling. According to Animine, this event, held in London, was the right moment to present Animine latest research outcomes on the calibration of the new AniGun® tool, based on the X-Ray Fluorescence technique. “One of the main limitations in precision formulation is that forages are extremely variable in mineral content and can contain antagonists that reduce the availability of some minerals (i.e. Cu, S, Mo and Fe). A quick and accurate assessment of the macro (P, Ca…) and micro-mineral (Zn, Cu, Mn…) composition in the ingredients of the ration is also extremely important to avoid nutritional imbalances, economic losses, and environmental impacts. For these reasons, Animine set the goal of providing analysis of minerals in forages with a portable device, usable on the field. For the calibration, samples of forages (grass, hay and grass silage) were collected. Lider Pet Food is a pet food producer with two high-tech production facilities in Turkey. The company has 15 years of experience in the production of dry pet food for dogs and cats as well as feed for birds, rabbits and rodents. Lider also supplies wet pet food and treats for several of its own brands. “The aim of this partnership is to exchange knowledge and grow together. Lider remains fully self-managed,” according to United Petfood. The newly set up high-end facility is part of Skretting’s commitment towards the Indian aquaculture sector and its strategy to further develop in Asia. The facility was inaugurated on February 13, 2023, by Dr. Sanjeev Balyan, Hon’ble Minister of State of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. Michiel van Erkel, Agriculture Counsellor for India and Sri Lanka, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands was also present at the opening. Spread over an area of 20,000 sq mt and built with an investment of EUR 18.5 million, the facility will cater to both shrimp and fish cultures. The shrimp cultures will include white tiger and black tiger, while fish cultures will include Indian major carps, and high-value fish like snakehead, seabass, among others. The Mangrol facility has three production lines with a production capacity of 50,000 metric tonnes per annum. It can produce both extruded/floating and pelleted/sinking feed as per the requirement of the species and customers. There is also adequate land and infrastructure available to increase the production capacity in the future. “We are thrilled to announce the launch of our state-of-the-art production facility at Mangrol in Surat. Karel Vervaet, Senior Product Specialist of BESTMIX® Software, which has half a century of experience in its field, explained both the importance of the software in feed production and what the BESTMIX® Recipe Management software provides to users. Mr. Vervaet, can we say that software simply means collecting data, storing, analyzing and strategizing according to the analysis? If so, why is data important? Can you explain the importance of data in the feed production sector? No, I think software cannot be labeled like that. For sure software exists out there that fits the description, but if I look at our software, then of course the data is key, but the features you apply on the data, the representation of the input and output, the user experience you give to users when working with the software are equally important as the data itself. Correct information / data is important in any industry, also in feed production. Some of the data can be collected in an automated way, like for instance animal performance figures on farm. Other data needs to be managed by knowledgeable users, to allow to generate the desired output. A perfect example for this are for instance the requirements that will determine the outcome of a least cost formulation. Today's world is very changeable. For example, while any feed ingredient may be abundant and cost-effective one day, it may be the opposite another day, or a highly preferred ingredient today may be replaced by a new alternative tomorrow. How do such changes affect the feed industry and can software help keep pace with these changes quickly? How? Due to the increasing competitive environment, cost-effective production is extremely important. On the other hand, factors such as sustainability and environmental impact are intensely on the agenda today. Can you tell us what the software offers to feed producers at the point of providing all these together? Sustainability is ‘the’ talk of the industry at the moment. The pressure to be more sustainable is very high, both from the government, but also from the consumer side. When looking at sustainability you have to consider the entire value chain, so not only producing feed in a more sustainable way, but also consider what happens on farm, in the slaughterhouse, right up to the retail. Furthermore, it is also important to not only look at the carbon footprint, because also in the animal production this only represents a small peace of the total impact. Another important topic here is objectiveness or certification. You need to be able to guarantee when you calculate the environmental footprint, that there is a way consumers can validate the outcome. Therefore, we partner with experts in the industry. BESTMIX® Recipe Management itself does not have the capability to calculate the environmental footprint, but our partners do, and we display the result during the formulation of a recipe or a feeding program. As a user you then have the opportunity to deep dive into the sustainability figures. In our latest release we also added optimization on environmental footprint to the software. What should be paid attention to when choosing and using a software for this? When looking for software in general I think some aspects are important: • Technology used • Customer service availability (phone, online, FAQ, …) • References in the same industry • Local presence of the vendor • Knowledge level of the software vendor • Innovations and update delivered by the vendor on the software • Languages in which the software is available • Protection of the data entered in the system • Backup / disaster recovery in case something goes wrong • Ultimately of course also the pricing will be an aspect to consider, although in my opinion not the most important one. More important is to have a close look at the ROI of the investment • User experience, ease of use • Is the software scalable, meaning if you grow as a company, is the software and hardware setup capable of following the same growth • Flexible reporting capabilities For feed formulation software more specific I think following aspects could be of importance: • Security/authorization: who can access certain data • Performance of certain workflows, how efficient can you manage recipes • Integrated labeling solution • Ability to formulate big amounts of recipes at the same time (several thousands in some cases) to be able to do the what if scenarios as mentioned higher in the doc • Strong integration with other software (MES, quality systems, ERP, …) • When applicable, combine ration calculation, feed optimization, premix formulation in one tool • Advanced formulation techniques available: - Work with enzymes - Integer optimization - Non-linear optimization - …. We are talking about many advantages of software. But can anyone use the software developed for feed formulation, etc.? Does it require special expertise to use them? Based on your own software solutions, can we also touch on the simple interface and ease of use? I think anybody can work with feed formulation software. Of course, you will need the proper training and guidance to be able to complete your daily work. Depending on your role in the company you will need specific knowledge. Needless to say that if you do not have nutritional knowledge it will be hard to manage recipes in a correct way. The software should be designed in such a way, that any user, with limited effort can truly experience al the benefits of our tools. In addition, animal welfare and sustainability variables must be considered in the formulation process. To make the best decisions, the use of digital solutions is key. Still, it may seem like too many digital technologies to wade through to deploy confidently for feed formulation. Technology can help determine the best formulation by helping you understand ingredient nutrient levels as they arrive at the feed mill and how to change and adapt the formulation based on how the nutrient levels change. Technology can help you use this data to select the best and most reliable suppliers to deliver the precise formulation needed for animals. But before tech deployment, you must be mindful of your overall strategy.
