Dear readers, The animal nutrition industry left the months of May and June behind with a busy event schedule. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the events which were able to be held only virtually for a while started to be held live/in-person again as of the spring months. In this way, industry representatives, who have been meeting with their business partners only in virtual environments for a long time, experienced the excitement of meeting face to face again and had the opportunity to share the innovations they developed. Among all these events, one of the most interesting and remarkable events was the “3rd Networking Days” organized by Bühler Group. The reason why I saw Bühler's event as remarkable was, of course, the several partnerships it launched. Bühler Group, one of the leading global powers in food and feed industries as in many other sectors, seemed to focus on new collaborations in the global market rather than innovations in processing technologies this year. It seems that Bühler will continue its growth in the global market with new partnerships in the coming years. There is another remarkable point in the new partnerships that Bühler Group has launched at this year’s Networking Days or announced in recent years, which gives us clues about how the future will be shaped. Alternative proteins, cultured meat and insect technologies… These are the hottest fields in which Bühler has recently invested. While the world is talking about climate change, global warming, rising population, increasing food demand, limited resources and sustainability; the areas in which Bühler invest are not a coincidence, of course. These investments are made for alternative solutions that are frequently mentioned for all the problems on our agenda. Each of these areas is very new for our world, but, due to their limited production volumes and high costs, they are not large enough to meet the needs of the real world and to radically change the food sources of humans and animals. However, many companies such as Bühler continue to invest in these areas. I am one of those who wonder how all these will affect the livestock and animal nutrition sectors. We will discuss these issues in detail in the autumn issues of our magazine and we will see together how the industry will give us clues. The new prediction tool is based on: • Recordings of temperature and humidity in several strategic regions for ruminant production. Temperature and humidity are keys to measure the environmental impact on animal performance, which is reported as the temperature and humidity index (THI). It is important to remember that the impact of stress is linked to the THI level and to the duration of exposure, both in terms of the number of hours per day and the number of consecutive days exposed to heat stress. • Consolidation of multiple published analyses (7 publications in dairy cows), with experiences in different continents to better predict specific regional losses, including dairy ewes and goats. African swine fever (ASF) has become a major threat to the pig industry. Prevention is the key to controlling the disease. Any measures applied must be comprehensive and must not omit any transmission route. Dr. Eckel Animal Nutrition has introduced new product Anta®Shield that addresses the risk of transmission through feed. Anta®Shield, based on highly effective phytogenics, contains bioactive ingredients from plants that have been cultivated for thousands of years for the very purpose of protecting food from pathogens. Vice President Dr Bernhard Eckel explains how the development of the new product came about: “We at Dr. Eckel have decades of experience with phytogenic active ingredients. Their antibacterial effect has been proven time and again. However, the hypothesis that they could also have antiviral properties is still relatively new. When developing Anta®Shield, we focused on plant substances that destabilise the biomembranes of gram-positive bacteria. Our trials suggest that these substances may also affect the envelope glycoproteins of the ASF virus.” Each of the tested plant extracts showed greater efficacy than the organic acid treatment in the comparison group. However, the best effect was achieved with a specific combination of various extracts. “It is only the synergetic effect of the selected active ingredients that produces the optimal result,” states Bernhard Eckel. Anta®Shield was born. For the trials, which were conducted in a special laboratory in Vietnam, pig feed was infected with the active virus. PCR assays were used to determine the viral load after one, three and seven days. After three days, virtually no viral DNA could be detected. Moreover, cell culture tests showed that the virus’ infectivity in the samples treated with Anta®Shield was reduced by a hundredfold after a mere 24 hours. NEWS 12 FEED & ADDITIVE MAGAZINE July 2022 Calysseo, a joint venture between worldwide animal nutrition leader Adisseo and protein innovator Calysta, will produce 20,000 tonnes of FeedKind® Aqua protein annually from the facility in Chongqing, China. The microbial protein is produced via a natural fermentation that does not use arable land, animal or plant matter, and uses very little water in its production. Initially, production will be available for use in China, the world’s largest aquaculture market. FeedKind® is part of a family of ingredients developed by Calysta, which harness the power of a naturally occurring microorganism that consumes low cost, land free carbon sources, converting it into a non-GMO, nutritionally rich protein, ideal for food and feed applications. FeedKind® has been validated over several years after extensive trials across several popular aquaculture species, including seabass, bream, and salmon. Calysta’s protein platform is also approved for use in livestock feeds and pet food. The JV partners are now focusing on bringing the next phase of the development forward, bringing output to 80,000 tonnes per year. First material from Calysseo is expected at the turn of the year. First industrial-scale FeedKind® facility heralds new era of food security Commissioning and start-up activities have commenced at the world’s first industrial-scale FeedKind® facility, to produce a new sustainable functional protein that does not use animal or plant ingredients in its production. Fish feed manufacturer Aller Aqua acquires Danforel Aller Aqua Group A/S announced that it took over the entire share capital in the company Danforel. The acquisition was completed as of 1 May 2022, according to a statement released by the company. "From Aller Aqua's side, we look forward to the new close collaboration between the companies, which will give both companies better opportunities to optimize fish farming, processing and marketing in the future,” says Aller Aqua CEO Hans Erik Bylling. “Very soon we will begin new investments in expanded fry facilities, as well as optimization in the production. In addition, we want to ensure the optimum utilization of the whole fish," adds CEO Hans Erik Bylling. With these initiatives, Danforel will continue to be the best procurer of fish produced in Danish aquaculture farms. Danforel's director Erik Hansen continues as CEO. Established in 1939 in Denmark, Danforel has 6 aquaculture facilities with 140 employees and a 15,000 m2 slaughterhouse. The company produces 120,000 consumer-packaged warm-smoked fish fillets daily and 4000 tons of ASC-certified trout. Aller Aqua, which started fish feed production in 1963, has factories in Denmark, Poland, Germany, Egypt, China, Zambia, and Serbia, and exports to more than 60 countries worldwide. Denmark-based fish feed manufacturer Aller Aqua Group acquired Danforel, one of Europe's leading producers of smoked trout fillets.

Protix, ForFarmers, PHW Group’s Dutch entity Esbro, Venik and Wageningen Livestock Research will be working closely together during the next two years. Their joint effort is to investigate how insect ingredients from the black soldier fly in poultry feed, affect sustainability, health and welfare parameters of slow-growing broiler chickens. Key Dutch players join forces to evaluate insect-derived feed ingredients Bühler and IMDHER join forces in Mexico Swiss Bühler Group announced the creation of a joint venture with IMDHER S.A. de C.V., a leading player in the animal nutrition market in Mexico, that will drive process efficiency, quality, and sustainability in the feed industry. The new company, called IMDHER Bühler, will offer Bühler’s core machines as well as IMDHER’s expertise to IMDHER’s customers, providing solutions that will help them to improve the capacity and efficiency of their operations. IMDHER brings four decades of experience building plants to produce animal feed, including pet food and aqua. The family-owned business is a turnkey supplier to the Mexican feed market, with 20% market share. Bühler is buying a minority stake of 49% in the joint venture. Feeding insects to poultry now is an interesting opportunity to transform low-value organic by-products into high-quality feed ingredients, since the European Commission approved the use of insect meal in poultry and pig feed in September 2021. This opportunity could expand the range of feed raw materials for chicken producers, but further information is still needed for the entire poultry chain. The consortium is going to move diligently forward on a science-based approach to evaluate potentially value-adding elements of chicken diets containing insect ingredients from the black soldier fly (BSF). The research project will be conducted in three phases, starting May 31, 2022, with a pilot to study effects of different inclusion levels of BSF larvae-derived ingredients in poultry feed. Based on the outcomes of this pilot, different broiler diets will be tested on large scale in chicken farms. DSM has announced that it is going to acquire Prodap, a Brazilian animal nutrition and technology company that combines customized nutritional solutions, consultancy and technology services. DSM acquires Brazil's leading animal nutrition technology company Prodap Royal DSM has announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Prodap, a Brazilian animal nutrition and technology company that combines technology offerings, consulting services, and customized nutritional solutions to drive efficiency and sustainability in animal farming. Based in Belo-Horizonte, Prodap is at the forefront of the market for digital solutions, which is growing particularly quickly in Brazil. Prodap combines nutrition, consultancy and technology services to optimize ruminant farming operations. Through its portfolio of digital solutions, it collects data and develops insights in real time, which are then translated into tailored nutritional solutions for customers, with remote or in-person support provided by its experienced consultants. About one third of global meat consumption is pork, only second after chicken. Due to its religious constraints and historic availability, the consumption of pork products varies widely between regions, but in both Europe and Asia it is the most consumed meat (1). Recent research into feeding the growing global human population has highlighted the potential of pigs in the recycling of by-products (mainly food waste and co-products) for food production. Their ability to turn by-products into food and manure, pigs return nutrients back into the food production system that would otherwise be lost (2, 3). Pork is often consumed in processed forms (minced meat, bacon, sausages, dry-cured or cooked ham and more), that have their origins related to preserving methods. Today, the main differentiation of pork products is made based on taste, origin and production standards. However, pork products still need to be attractive and made safe over time for consumers. Due to the variety in final products and changing preferences of the consumer, targeted meat quality can differ and may change over time (4). The impact of several factors influencing meat quality in general and pork quality specifically have been studied in detail. More research is still needed to reduce oxidative stress in meat after slaughter as it affects its ability to be processed and stored. Examples of characteristics that are influenced by oxidative stress, are fat quality and water holding capacity (1). Zinc is an essential nutrient for many physiological processes in the organism supporting health and good growth and development. Major functions of zinc on a cellular level are catching free radicals and preventing lipid peroxidation as part of the antioxidant system (5). Therefore, a deficiency of zinc in pigs may affect the pork quality after slaughter and processing. More specifically for pork quality, recent data shows that supplementing zinc from zinc-glycinate in the finishing phase of fattening pigs reduced the chilling losses of their carcasses after slaughter (Figure 1) (8). The meat from pigs supplemented with zinc-glycinate showed less lipid peroxidation after cooking, especially with the lower dose of zinc-glycinate (Figure 2) (8). The lipid stability in cooked pork is essential for the quality and taste of cooked pork products. Pork is and will be an important source of animal protein, and zinc can be part of a nutritional strategy to improve the quality of pork. Copper (Cu) at high dietary levels has been used for a long time as a growth promoter in different production animals. Two possible modes of action have been proposed: a pre (antimicrobial and local) and a post (systemic) absorption effect. In the feed, Cu is usually provided as a sulphate source (CuSO4), although other sources are also available. Increasing CuSO4 supplementation to supra nutritional levels is well recognized to significantly enhance the growth performance of piglets, as shown in the Figure 1 where the improvement in body weight (BW) is of 3.4 kg when 160 mg/kg of Cu are compared to 15 mg/kg. HYPOTHESIS OF PRE-ABSORPTION EFFECT OF Cu The antimicrobial effect has been recognized since Ancient Egypt, where Cu was used to sterilize chest wounds and drinking water. In the pig, this antimicrobial effect would occur once dietary Cu passes through the stomach, dissociated into Cu ion, and reaches the intestine in its ionic form. Some authors reported that the supplementation of high Cu (250 ppm from CuSO4) reduced the cecal Enterobacteriaceae population by 23% and improved the average daily gain in piglets by 37% when compared to a basal diet. The improvement in pig performance following supra nutritional addition of Cu in the diets was also observed in a recent feeding trial performed at Wageningen University & Research (WUR) with 200 weaned piglets. Copper was supplemented from CuSO4 at two levels (15 or 160 ppm) in the diets. The significant increase in the final BW by Cu supplementation was accompanied by a decrease in E. coli population in the colon (Figure 2). These results suggest that prior to absorption, high levels of Cu reduce bacterial populations, resulting in a positive modulation of the intestinal microbiota. Other studies have also shown that high Cu dosages by CuSO4 supplementation significantly inhibited potential pathogenic coliforms in the cecum and the colon of piglets. Besides this, the modulation of microbiota also has an effect on the dietary utilization and metabolism of energy and protein, which may render available more energy and nutrients for the host animal. In the small intestine, for example, bacteria can produce the bile salt hydrolase (BSH) enzyme, which is involved in lipid metabolism and energy release. A reduction of this enzymatic activity has been reported as effective to enhance feed efficiency and body weight gain in monogastric animals. As Cu is one of the main BSH inhibitors, a modulation of the intestinal microbiota composition may be one mechanism by which Cu improves growth performance in piglets. This may explain why some recent studies demonstrated that Cu supplementation seems to enhance pigs' ability to utilize fat after absorption, resulting in increased energy utilization of the entire diet. HYPOTHESIS OF POST ABSORPTION EFFECT OF Cu Once Cu is in the intestine, the Cu (II) form must be reduced at membrane level to the Cu(I) form, so it can be absorbed by the enterocytes. Cu is exported via the portal venous system to the liver, which is the central regulatory organ of copper homeostasis; but it can be then taken up by other tissues (brain, kidney, heart…). On its entry to the hepatocyte, Cu is again rapidly taken up by cytosolic ligands such as MT and glutathione. The main role of MT is the storage of Cu in a “safe compartment” and the sequestration of an intracellular excess of Cu in response to supra-physiological Cu exposure, which can generate hydroxyl radicals and be potentially toxic. Because the liver is the main storage site for Cu, the bioavailability of Cu sources has been traditionally evaluated by using liver Cu accumulation as the key criterion. This kind of studies have been performed at nutritional dosages, to allow homeostatic regulation. More recently, however, feeding trials with high Cu levels for pigs have also used hepatic Cu as an indicator of bioavailability. These levels, which by far exceed the requirements of pigs, demonstrate with the Cu accumulation in the liver, a way that the organ finds to avoid Cu toxicity. Into hepatocytes, Cu is associated to different enzymes and the excess is removed from the liver through biliary excretion. The Figure 4. As around 80% of the absorbed Cu is excreted in the bile, a post absorption antimicrobial activity of Cu has been raised by some authors. It has been reported that the Cu in the bile is in the form of nonabsorbable-stable copper chelates. Biliary Cu recycling can be thus, considered negligible and being mostly excreted in feces. Besides, the Cu excreted by the bile (considering the Cu concentration and the bile flow during 28 days) represents less than 0.1% of total Cu intake, so it can be suggested that biliary excreted Cu would not have the same antimicrobial impact on microbiota as the dissociated Cu ion after ingestion. The increase of Cu supplementation from 125 to 250 mg/kg of Cu from CuSO4 for fattening pigs resulted in higher hepatic Cu accumulation, so it can be expected to have a high Cu exportation in the bile. However, after 133 days of trial, final BW did not increase accordingly (Figure 3). Although a plateau in the growth rate of finishing pigs was observed when Cu levels in the feed exceed 100 mg/kg, Cu accumulation in the liver showed a dose response behaviour. The storage of Cu in the liver is a consequence of Cu intake and not the cause of its growth promoter effect. Besides, the long-term feeding with high Cu levels leads to an excess of Cu in the organism, which can cause cellular damage through the formation of free radicals and this may induce oxidative stress. PRE VS POST ABSORPTION HYPOTHESES According to recent studies, copper metabolism seems to be not related to growth promotion. The strongest hypothesis is that its effect seems to be related to microbiota modulation resulting in the improvement of gut health, but not to Cu accumulation in the liver. Thus, a more antibacterial copper source might be more efficient to promote growth. The effects of Cu in killing bacteria differ according to its redox state: the Cu(I), the reduced cuprous form, has a stronger antibacterial effect in anaerobic conditions than Cu (II), the oxidized cupric form. A red source of monovalent copper (CoRouge®, Animine) has shown improved pig performance and a strong antibacterial effect, with lower risk of animal toxicity. Based on industry statistics, many industry nutritionists follow long established norms by simply selecting an inorganic source of trace mineral (oxides and or sulphates) to fill the void without taking all the variables associated with the selection of a cost effective, highly effective source of trace mineral into account. With increasing demand for improved environmental compliance and using resources in a more sustainable way nutritionists are beginning to re-evaluate their trace mineral strategies. When assessing the overall cost and value of a trace mineral source a few basic requirements must be kept in mind.
